Guide to the Pleiades Club Collection 1893-1943 MSS 35

Collection:

The Pleiades Club was a Greenwich Village literary society of the early 20th century. Howard Neiman was a member of the Board of Governors throughout the Club's history, and served in other posts at the Club. The collection includes Neiman's club correspondence and printed items which illuminate aspects of the literary and artistic life of the Village of that time.

Guide to the Jill "Billy" Rainsford Papers 1922-1991 MSS 30

Jill Rainsford (1905-1994) was born Marguerite Rainsford (known as Billy), in Brooklyn. She was an actress, songwriter, painter and author, and was prominent in New York's Vaudeville theater and motion picture industry during the 1920s both as an actress and songwriter. The collection includes an unpublished autobiography, correspondence, sheet music and a large number of photographs and memorabilia.

Guide to the Records of the 7th Regiment 1767-1983 (bulk 1830-1947) 7th Regiment Records

Collection:

This collection documents the history and administration of the 7th Regiment of New York. The bulk of the material pertains to regimental management, organization, and events, rather than its participation in combat and other military activities. Items include orders, correspondence, financial and legal records, reports, by-laws, enlistment records, and rosters from 7th Regiment headquarters and companies. Also included is material relating to the regiment's armories (especially the Park Ave. and 66th St. location), veterans' organizations, music, athletic clubs, recreational activities, and entertainment. The collection contains numerous scrapbooks, visual materials, publications, artifacts, and ephemera.

Guide to the Papers of Harmon Hendricks Goldstone 1906-1979 (bulk 1966-1979)

Collection:

The bulk of this collection consists of 27 volumes containing the daily summaries of Harmon H. Goldstone during, and for a brief time after, his tenure as the first paid Chairman of New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission (October 21, 1968 - June 25, 1974). In addition, more than 170 Landmarks Designation Reports and related materials for the years 1973 through 1979 are included, as are several documents from Goldstone's earlier work with the City Planning Commission. Personal and professional clippings, along with some memorabilia, are also among the papers.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (1890-1964) was a leading Irish-American Communist, socialist, feminist, labor organizer, orator, and campaigner for civil liberties. Joe Hill (1879-1915), labor songwriter and member of the Industrial Workers of the World, was convicted of murder after a politically charged trial and executed by the State of Utah on November 19, 1915. The collection contains prison letters to Flynn, a letter to William D. Haywood, Hill’s “My Last Will” (a poem), letters from defense attorney O.N. Hilton, lyrics of a song by Hill for Flynn’s son, Fred (“To Bronco Buster Flynn’), a clippings scrapbook about the case, “Joe Hill Murdered,” and a memorial program.

The collection contains correspondence, a scrapbook of clippings covering her speaking tours of 1915-16, published and unpublished writings about women, materials relating to the Communist Party’s litigation contesting the McCarran Act and Smith, and a poem about Carlo Tresca.

Personal and professional papers of Arthur L. Kopit, a major playwright on and off Broadway beginning in the 1960s. Professional materials include significant documentation of all his major works beginning with "Oh Dad, Poor Dad... " and continuing through "Phantom". Records include research materials, notes, drafts and completed versions of produced and unproduced plays, screenplays, teleplays, novels, and story treatments. Personal materials include correspondence, financial documents, photographs, ephemera and materials generated by Kopit's parents, wife, and children.

Cormac K. H. O’Malley (1942-) is an attorney who has been an international corporate counsel and consultant. From the 1960s through the 1980s, O’Malley was active in the New York Irish community, joining various cultural, academic and social organizations. This collection includes materials regarding Irish-American and Irish cultural, educational, charitable, historical and political affairs. It consists of correspondence, newsletters, brochures and promotional material for the American Committee for Ulster Justice, the Irish American Cultural Institute, and the Irish American National Bicentennial Committee. Also included are articles and texts about the Northern Ireland political and military crisis during the 1970s and lobbying material for the 1972 U.S. Congressional Hearings on Northern Ireland. O’Malley collected the materials through his contacts with various organizations in the Irish communities in New York, Boston, and Dublin, and his involvement with the struggle for civil rights in Northern Ireland.
